Your Complete Guide to Lakeside Vanlife in the Ozarks
Beaver Lake is one of the best-kept secrets for van campers in the Midwest. With over 28,000 acres of crystal-clear water, 487 miles of shoreline, and some of the most scenic campsites in Arkansas, it's no wonder vanlifers from across the country make the trip. Whether you're in a converted Sprinter, a Promaster, or a simple minivan setup, Beaver Lake has spots that'll make you want to stay longer than planned.
One of the most van-friendly spots on Beaver Lake. The sites here are spacious enough for larger rigs, and several have direct lake access. The gravel pads handle any conversion van without issue. It gets popular on summer weekends, so arrive Thursday if you can.
Best for: Larger vans, families, lake access • Reservations: Recreation.gov • Cell service: Decent Verizon, spotty AT&T
This is where the locals go. Smaller, quieter, and genuinely beautiful. The sites are tucked into the woods with enough space between them that you feel like you're alone. Some spots are tight for full-size Sprinters, but Transits and Promasters fit fine. The sunset views over the lake are worth the drive.
Best for: Solitude seekers, photographers • Reservations: First-come, first-served • Cell service: Limited
Great balance of amenities and natural beauty. You've got showers and flush toilets nearby, but the sites still feel like camping. The boat ramp means you can bring a kayak or paddleboard easily. Known for friendly camp hosts who actually help if you need anything.
Best for: First-timers, paddlers • Reservations: Recreation.gov • Cell service: Good
If you want truly free camping, head up War Eagle Creek. There are pull-offs along the gravel roads where vanlifers have been camping for years. You're on your own out here — no facilities, no reservations, no fees. Just you, your van, and the creek. Pack out everything you bring in.
Best for: Experienced vanlifers, budget camping • Reservations: None needed • Cell service: None
🔋 Power Considerations
Most established campgrounds have 30/50 amp hookups if you need them. But if you're set up with a proper solar and battery system, you can stay at the dispersed sites indefinitely. The Ozarks get good sun even in shoulder seasons.
📶 Connectivity
Verizon works best around Beaver Lake. AT&T is hit or miss. If you're a remote worker, stick to the campgrounds near Rogers or Eureka Springs for more reliable signal. Or invest in a Starlink setup — game changer for lake camping.
🚿 Water & Dump Stations
Fresh water and dump stations are available at most Corps of Engineers campgrounds around the lake. If you're in a camper van without a black tank, composting toilets make life much easier out here.
🗓️ Best Times to Visit
Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are ideal. Summer is gorgeous but crowded and hot. Winter can be surprisingly mild in the Ozarks, and you'll have the lake practically to yourself.
