Flarespace Sprinter and Transit Van Flares
We know, we talk about living space in your camper van a lot – and that’s because there is a limited amount. And that amount of space is clearly defined by the van size you are working with. As far as we have found, only one upfit option truly increases some of the real-estate you have to work with, and that option is adding flares from FlareSpace. As the original designer and builder of what has been called a ‘bump out panel’, FlareSpace flares are extended fiberglass panels that increase usable space by several inches side-to-side. Depending on the type of flare you choose, it may only take a flare added to one side of your van to create enough space for a side-to-side panel bed configuration. That means you have even more living area real estate to work with, which means greater comfort and functionality for all your van adventures!
The Sprinter 144” Flares cover your Sprinter van’s 3rd row seating area, or bunk area. They come in regular depths of 3.25” and extended depths of 5.25”. This means if you add flares to passenger and driver side, you will an average 76” width with the regular flares. Note that for all flares, adding a window, whether slider or awning, will remove about an inch of space at the height of the window.
The Sprinter 170” Flares extend your drivers’ side cargo window, your choice of 2.875” or 4.375”. The Regular depth flares added to both sides will give you a usable space of around 76”, and the Extended flares similarly added offer 79”.
The Sprinter 144” and 170” FULL Flares provide a wider overall profile, with the flare extended further towards the edges before tapering in towards your van. The Regular Full Flares offer an extra 3.25” of space per flare, and the Extended flares offer an extra 5.25”. By installing the Sprinter Full Extended Flares on both driver and passenger side, you get an incredible addition of almost 12” of extra space side-to-side in your van! This widens the rear cargo area of your Sprinter adventure van from 67.5” to an incredible 80”+, which means that even the tallest sleeper (okay, unless the sleeper is over 6’8”) can comfortably stretch out side-to-side on a panel bed. These can be ordered with half-slider or awning style windows, or no windows.
The Sprinter 170” MEGA Flares are the biggest flare product on the market. Unlike the standards flares which are installed in your 3rd row, the Extended Flares stretch all the way from behind the driver’s side door clear to the back of the van, and on the passenger side from behind the sliding door again to the rear of the van. On the Driver’s side, the Mega Flares extended roughly 6.5” and between 4.5 and 5.25” on the Passenger side. These can be ordered in the Arctic Turn option, which includes a small window behind the driver’s door in the 2nd row, and a long half bunk window in the 4th row.
The Ford Transit 148” Flares come in one standard 3.25” depth, available for the Driver and Passenger sides. Adding Regular flares to both sides of your Transit camper van will give you a usable bunk width of almost 80” side-to-side. The flares can be ordered with glass half-sliders or awning windows, or the Arctic Tern awning, which is a clear fiberglass that does not transmit as much heat or cold as glass will.
The Ford Transit 148” MEGA Flares are, like the Sprinter Mega Flares, the largest flares available for the Transit van, extending from just behind the passenger or driver’s door, clear to the rear of the van and covering both 2nd and 3rd row areas. Ordering the Arctic Tern option ads a long half bunk window, and shorter square window in the front 2nd row section.
In other words, there is a LOT of versatility in your choice of Flares for your adventure van! You can choose between having flares installed on BOTH sides of your van, or just one side, if only need a few inches of extra space for comfortable sleeping arrangements. The fiberglass flares come with a gray, gel coat paint to provide weather resistance – and can be painted after installation to match your van’s finish for an unbroken aesthetic.
The Arctic Tern windows are unique from standard flat glass awning windows – made instead of a clear, convex fiberglass – offering a bit more space in the window area, and less easily conducting heat or cold inside the van. The Arctic Turn option come with covers that quickly attach to magnetic strips you can place around the windows. They roll up and secure over the windows.
