People ask us this constantly: should I build my own van or hire a shop? Both are valid. Here is what each one costs, what each one gets you, and the hybrid option most people don't consider.
We sell parts. We install parts. We build complete vans. Whichever path you go, we are not trying to push you onto the most expensive one — we are trying to help you build a van that actually works. What follows is the honest breakdown. We don't do DIY consulting (we don't have the time and we won't do it half-well), but everything we install is also for sale, so you can buy the same parts whether or not you have us install them.
Labor. A full DIY build can save tens of thousands compared to a pro build, depending on what you would have paid for. You also learn the van — every wire, every fastener — which makes you faster at fixing things on the road.
Time. Most DIY builds take 6 to 18 months of evenings and weekends. The hidden cost is also rework — the average first-time builder redoes at least one major system because they figured it out on the second pass. Insulation and wiring are the most common.
Warranty. If your DIY heater install voids the manufacturer warranty, that is on you. Resale also takes a hit — most buyers pay less for a DIY build than for a documented pro build, even at the same finish quality.
People who enjoy the build, have tools and shop space, and are not on a deadline. The build itself is the project. If that describes you, DIY is genuinely the right call. We would just rather sell you good parts than watch you buy bad ones.
Time and rework. A pro build takes weeks to months instead of a year. You skip the learning curve. You skip the trip back to the hardware store on a Saturday because you bought the wrong size butyl tape.
Money. A pro build is more expensive than the same build done yourself — labor is real. We use proven parts at set prices for most components and quote anything custom separately, so you see the price before you commit.
Warranty coverage on parts and labor. Documented installs that hold up at resale. Fitment that respects the vehicle's structural ribs and water management. Systems that talk to each other instead of fighting each other.
People with a deadline. People who want the van for the trips, not for the project. Anyone who tried DIY for a weekend and decided it was not for them. See Full Custom Builds.
Bed framing, paneling, finish carpentry — these are the most forgiving systems and the highest-labor lines on a quote. Doing them yourself saves real money without much risk.
Electrical, climate, suspension, plumbing — these are where DIY mistakes get expensive or dangerous. We will install just the systems you don't want to handle. See Individual Install Services.
Whether we install or you do, you can buy from our menu. Same parts we put in our own builds. We'll spec the right match for your platform and give you straight install advice on the specific product.
A van that costs less than a full pro build, takes less time than a full DIY build, and has warranty coverage on the systems where it matters most. This is what most experienced van builders end up doing the second time.
Install order. The cheapest mistake on a DIY build is doing things in the wrong order. Insulation goes in before paneling. Wiring goes in before cabinetry. Heaters are easier before walls go up. If you DIY, plan the order before you buy anything.
Platform fit. Most DIY guides are written for one platform. Sprinter parts don't always fit ProMaster. Transit-specific install procedures don't carry over. Read the install guide for your van, not a generic one.
The expensive systems are the ones to outsource. Electrical, climate, and suspension are where pro install pays for itself in safety margin and warranty. Furniture, paneling, and bed framing are where DIY pays for itself in saved labor.
